Charles M. Zacks, M.D. is a fellowship trained ophthalmologist specializing in medical and surgical management of corneal and external diseases of the eye. He performs a wide range of surgical procedures, including conventional corneal transplantation, lamellar keratoplasty (including DSEK), routine and complex cataract surgery, and treatment of less common disorders such as ocular tumors and reconstruction after eye trauma. Dr. Zacks is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Zacks has been caring for patients at Maine Eye Center since 1990. He earned his medical degree at Yale after graduating with honors from Brown University. He completed a residency in San Francisco at the California Pacific Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in corneal and external diseases at the internationally recognized Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.
Committed to medical education, Dr. Zacks is a Clinical Instructor of the Tufts University School of Medicine, and maintains an active teaching schedule in ophthalmic surgery. Dr. Zacks is published in peer-reviewed medical literature and textbooks on topics ranging from corneal physiology to medical ethics, and is a recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award.
As an active member of the ophthalmic community, Dr. Zacks’ has held leadership positions in regional and national ophthalmologic organizations, including a committee chairmanship in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and President of the New England Ophthalmologic Society. He is a Past President of the Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons has represented Maine in the Academy’s Council. Dr. Zacks currently serves on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Board of Trustees.
